With the many challenges facing society today, more and more people are interested in making a positive contribution with their investments. At the same time there is a need for more information as to how they can achieve this.
In response to this, Richard Essex, Financial Adviser at Grayside has written a book entitled “Invest, Feel Good, Make a Difference”.
The book explains many ways that the investor can make a contribution that will help stimulate a healthier and safer planet, whilst achieving a healthy monetary return. Whilst written in 2014 this is still relevant today.
Richard provides a wealth of research to support this and breaks many of the myths that have been associated with SRI (socially responsible / ethical investing) in the past.
My money won’t make a difference – Not the case. Investing in this area is making real change in areas such as the low carbon economy and reducing world poverty.
Investing this way sacrifices performance – There is no evidence to support this. In fact, many SRI / ethical funds are competing well against more conventional funds. There is also a growing school of thought which suggests that investment analysis which recognises environmental, social and governance factors is more likely to lead to greater financial sustainability.
The market is not mature enough – On the contrary; the SRI investment market has grown considerably. According to EIRIS’s (Ethical Investment Research and Information Service) latest research, total retail investment has increased from £792m in July 1995 to £15bn in July 2015.
The book is pitched very much at the ordinary investor and explains why this is such an exciting and growing area.
